Cram Session - Week 5

There are three games pitting ranked teams against each other, as the conference season ramps up. Notre Dame hosts Washington, while Nebraska has the weekend off, before their huge Thursday night game at Missouri.

Games That Matter to Me That May Not Matter to You

Clemson (2-2, 1-1) at Maryland (1-3, 0-0)

I know this seems like a random game for me to include but the reason I do is because I will be attending this game Saturday. I haven't made it to many college football stadiums in my time, and while Maryland is terrible, it could be fun. The Terps have been terrible thus far this year and things don't expect to get better in this one. Clemson nearly pulled off the upset at home against TCU, and also played Georgia Tech tough. Maryland is not good on either side of the ball and this could be head coach Ralph Friedgen's last season if things continue to trend downward.

Prediction: Clemson 28, Maryland 17

Washington (2-2) at Notre Dame (3-1)

The Irish head back home after a gutty road win at Purdue. Hopefully, RB Armando Allen will be back for this one, and QB Jimmy Clausen will be feeling better. As I predicted, Washington suffered a letdown on the road against Stanford and was blown out. Or maybe, they just got lucky against USC and aren't that far removed from the winless team of a season ago. Washington is led by QB Jake Locker, who has NFL scouts drooling about his ability. It will be on the Irish defense to maintain him as best they can. The defense played a lot better against Purdue but still is definitely the weak link of the team. I like Notre Dame's chances in this one, especially at home.

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, Washington 28

Top 25

#3 Alabama (4-0, 1-0) at Kentucky (2-1, 0-1)

There is a growing sentiment that after four weeks of the season Alabama is the real #1 team in the country. I can't say I disagree. They have played much tougher competition than Florida or Texas. Poor Kentucky has to face Florida one week, then Alabama this week. Kentucky did give Florida QB Tim Tebow a concussion but were completely blown out by the Gators. I expect more of the same this weekend.

Prediction: Alabama 37, Kentucky 20

#4 LSU (4-0, 2-0) at #18 Georgia (3-1, 2-0)

LSU has risen to #4 but hasn't done much to really prove they are that good. The win at Washington was underwhelming and they barely survived last weekend at Mississippi State. Georgia has also been hard to gauge. They have won three straight but those could just have easily been losses, considering the Bulldogs have won all three in the final seconds. I think this game will be close throughout and also turnover filled. I think Georgia escapes with another close victory.

Prediction: Georgia 23, LSU 20

UC-Davis (1-2) at #5 Boise State (4-0)

Boise State made some news with them vaulting all the way to number 5. If they can remain undefeated, which is a real possibility, they could have a chance to play for the national title. I think Boise belongs at five. The win over Oregon looks more impressive after what the Ducks did to California, and Boise hasn't been challenged in their three wins since. That will continue this week.

Prediction: Boise State 58, UC-Davis 10

#6 Virginia Tech (3-1, 1-0) at Duke (2-2, 0-0)

After two straight weeks of intense home games, the Hokies have a potentially dangerous game at Duke. The Hokies are much better than Duke but after being on such emotional highs the last two weeks, a letdown is inevitable. Talent will still win out.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 27, Duke 13

#7 USC (3-1, 1-1) at #24 California (3-1, 0-1)

This game has lost some of its cache with each team losing befuddingly early in the season. USC also suffered tragedy this week, with the accident that RB Stafon Johnson suffered while bench pressing. The key to this game will be Cal's star RB Jahvid Best. Best was shut down by Oregon and it affected California's offense. USC has QB Matt Barkley back and their is noticeable difference in the USC offense when he plays. I am really not sure what to make of this game. I guess I don't think Cal is as bad as they showed last weekend.

Prediction: California 24, USC 21

#8 Oklahoma (3-1) at #17 Miami (2-1)

The other big night game is this one. Miami was destroyed by Virginia Tech last week and at least to me, proved they are huge frauds. The big question mark in this one is whether Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford will return or not. I don't think he will which hurts the Sooners chances considerably. However, I have started riding this fraud Miami thing pretty hard (that's what she said), so I should stick with it.

Prediction: Oklahoma 27, Miami 20

#9 Ohio State (3-1, 1-0) at Indiana (3-1, 0-1)

The Buckeyes have been real impressive the last few weeks, pitching back to back shutouts. The Hoosiers suffered their first loss last weekend, but put in a great effort at Michigan. I think someone will finally score on the Buckeyes, but Ohio State will keep rolling.

Prediction: Ohio State 29, Indiana 14

#10 Cincinnati (4-0) at Miami (Ohio) (0-4)

This one is going to get ugly.

Prediction: Cincinnati 41, Miami (Ohio) 10

Southern Methodist (2-1) at #11 TCU (3-0)

SMU just lost to Washington State. I don't like their chances.

Prediction: TCU 34, Southern Methodist 13

#12 Houston (3-0, 0-0) at UTEP (1-3, 0-0)

UTEP is coming off a whooping from Texas, while the Cougars had an emotional win at home against Texas Tech. Houston being relevant reminds me of my childhood and Andre Ware and David Klingler.

Prediction: Houston 38, UTEP 15

Arkansas State (1-2) at #13 Iowa (4-0)

Kirk Ferentz and Iowa have Joe Paterno and Penn State's number. With that win Iowa jumped from unranked, all the way to 13th. Arkansas State will go to Iowa, get beat, and get paid.

Prediction: Iowa 34, Arkansas State 16

#15 Penn State (3-1, 0-1) at Illinois (1-2, 0-1)

Both these teams have to move on from bitter defeats last weekend. Illinois seems to be coming apart, while Penn State remains an enigma. Illinois will keep this close but not close enough.

Prediction: Penn State 28, Illinois 23

Washington State (1-3, 0-2) at #16 Oregon (3-1, 1-0)

So which Oregon team is the real deal? The one that embarrassed themselves on national television against Boise State? Or the ones that completely crapped on California's season? A game at home against Washington State will have people thinking the latter is true.

Prediction: Oregon 48, Washington State 21

Utah State (1-2) at #20 BYU (3-1)

BYU bounced back nicely after their mystifying loss at home to Florida State. BYU takes a quick break from conference play to beat up on Utah State.

Prediction: BYU 33, Utah State 19

#21 Mississippi (2-1, 0-1) at Vanderbilt (2-2, 0-2)

The Rebels dropped 17 spots after losing to South Carolina. They didn't get killed which leads me to believe that the media knew they had overrated Ole Miss. Vandy returns to SEC play where they are winless. Ole Miss gets back on track.

Prediction: Mississippi 24, Vanderbilt 9

#22 Michigan (4-0, 1-0) at Michigan State (1-3, 0-1)

Its the rivalry game that only the state of Michigan cares about. The Wolverines have already surpassed their win total from last season, while Michigan State is riding a three game losing streak. This will be the Wolverines first road game of the season, and will be quite the shock for Wolverines golden boy QB Tate Forcier.

Prediction: Michigan State 35, Michigan 32

#25 Georgia Tech (3-1) at Mississippi State (2-2)

Dan Mullen looks like he is quickly improving Mississippi State. Georgia Tech is back in the Top 25 but mostly by default. ACC teams are very bad on the road.

Prediction: Mississippi State 27, Georgia Tech 24

Last Week: 19-5
Overall: 71-17

The Week That Was

The Washington Redskins have no heart. That was the biggest thing I came away with after their embarrassing loss to the Detroit Lions yesterday. If they had heart they would have been pissed off after hearing how terrible they were all last week, despite getting a win. I expected to see a team that was angry that it was widely believed they would be the team to lose to the Lions. Instead I saw a team that really didn't give a crap, led by a head coach that is in way over his head. The Redskins next 3 games are against teams that are a combined 0-9. The sad thing is I could see the Redskins losing all three of those. The team's offense is deplorable once inside the 20, the defense looks soft, especially the secondary. Not much else can be said, the Redskins are currently one of the worst teams in the league. They let a rookie QB carve them up, they let a team that hadn't won in 19 games go 99 yards on them. Blargh.

The San Francisco 49ers suffered a heart breaking loss to Minnesota, but still should feel pretty good about themselves. Despite losing star RB Frank Gore on the first play of the game, the Niners hung in, with QB Shaun Hill and TE Vernon Davis connecting on a couple of touchdowns. Coach Mike Singletary is the antithesis of Jim Zorn. You can see his personality taking shape on the 49ers, the intensity, the will to win, and the belief that losing is unacceptable.

The Miami Dolphins dropped to 0-3 with a loss at San Diego, and also lost starting QB Chad Pennington. Pennington is expected to be out next week, in what is a must win game for the Dolphins. It is hard to tell if the Dolphins are really 0-3 bad, or if their brutal schedule is the main culprit.

In college football the hobbled Notre Dame Fighting Irish survived Purdue to improve to 3-1. QB Jimmy Clausen shared time with backup QB Dayne Crist. However, with Purdue up 21-17, Clausen was called on to lead the winning drive and did just that. It wasn't always pretty but it was a good road win, especially with the Irish missing so many key pieces on offense. The Nebraska Cornhuskers took out their frustration on Louisiana-Lafayette, destroying them 55-0. The Cornhuskers get this weekend off, then have a huge road game on Thursday night at Missouri.

Oh and one word for the Miami Hurricanes.

The Hail Mary - Week 3

The Washington Redskins have officially become a national joke. You know you're a joke when everyone and their mother is picking a team that has lost 19 games in a row to beat you. However, I think the pundits jumping on the Detroit Lions to beat Washington might be the best thing that could have happened to the Redskins.

Games That I Will Be Watching

Washington (1-1) at Detroit (0-2), Washington favored by 6 1/2

The Redskins might as well be 0-2. That is the mood of the Washington Metro area after their ugly 9-7 victory over the putrid St. Louis Rams last weekend. Because of that poor performance, the national media has become convinced that the Redskins will be the team to finally fall to the Lions. While certainly possible, it won't happen. The Redskins have been hearing all week how terrible they are. Their coach sucks, their quarterback sucks, their offense sucks, you name it, they have heard it. Before the season the Skins would have overlooked this game. However, circumstances have made this the biggest game of their young season. The Redskins can move the ball on offense, they just can't score once they hit the red zone. I think the Lions defense is susceptible to the big play. I also think that the Redskins defense can make life a living hell for Lions rookie QB Matthew Stafford. I don't think Washington will blow out Detroit but the Skins will get the win.

Prediction: Washington 24, Detroit 20

Kansas City (0-2) at Philadelphia (1-1), No Line

The big news in this game will be the official return of Eagles QB Mike Vick to the NFL. Vick will definitely play, with the main question being whether or not he or Jeff Garcia will be the number 2 quarterback behind Kevin Kolb. The Eagles will be without QB Donovan McNabb for a second straight week, and could also be without RB Brian Westbrook and WR DeSean Jackson. Healthy, the Eagles could easily handle the Chiefs at home, but with the amount of injuries they will struggle. I still think even injured they are good enough to beat the Chiefs and their anemic offense.

Prediction: Philadelphia 23, Kansas City 17

Pittsburgh (1-1) at Cincinnati (1-1), Pittsburgh favored by 4

This game gained some luster with the Steelers loss to Chicago, and the Bengals win at Green Bay. The Bengals are trying to prove that they can compete for the AFC North with the Steelers and Ravens. However, in recent history the Steelers have owned the Bengals in Cincinnati. I expect that trend to continue.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 26, Cincinnati 21

Indianapolis (2-0) at Arizona (1-1), Arizona favored by 2

If Petyon Manning and the Colts can win a game where they only have the ball for 15 minutes, why bet against them?

Prediction: Indianapolis 28, Arizona 24

Carolina (0-2) at Dallas (1-1), Dallas favored by 9

The Cowboys, and namely QB Tony Romo, opened the new Cowboys stadium with a thud. Romo threw 3 INTs and was a big reason Dallas lost to the Giants. Panthers QB Jake Delhomme knows all about being the goat. He played much better last week but it wasn't enough against the Falcons. Carolina will be playing for their season on Monday night, and will be desperate. A desperate team is not going to lose by more than 9 to a average team.

Prediction: Dallas 27, Carolina 20

Rest of Week 3

Green Bay (1-1) at St. Louis (0-2), Green Bay favored by 6 1/2

The Packers can't protect QB Aaron Rodgers and have been decimated with injuries to their offensive line. Fortunately for them, the Rams can't rush the quarterback, registering 0 sacks in their first two games.

Prediction: Green Bay 31, St. Louis 25

San Francisco (2-0) at Minnesota (2-0), Minnesota favored by 7

Although it isn't getting much attention, this is the game of the weekend. The 49ers look like they have a Top 10 defense, and RB Frank Gore was brilliant in last week's win against Seattle. Obviously, people still aren't buying them as legit, hence the Vikings being favored by 7. This is a complete homer pick, but I think the 49ers announce they are for real on Sunday.

Prediction: San Francisco 21, Minnesota 19

Atlanta (2-0) at New England (1-1), New England favored by 4

I predicted the Patriots would go 14-2 and win the Super Bowl. However, after how they have looked the first two weeks, they will be lucky to make the playoffs. I expected the Falcons to have a drop off, but QB Matt Ryan looks even better, and the defense has played well. I think eventually the Patriots will get it together, just not this week.

Prediction: Atlanta 28, New England 21

Tennessee Titans (0-2) at New York Jets (2-0), New York Jets favored by 2 1/2

Many people thought the records would be opposite going into this game. The Jets defense has played tremendous, and you can already see the impact coach Rex Ryan has had on them. The Titans will be playing for their season, while I think the Jets might be too in love with themselves, after all the slobbing the media has given them this past week.

Prediction: Tennessee 16, New York Jets 13

New York Giants (2-0) at Tampa Bay (0-2), New York Giants favored by 6 1/2

It is going to be a long year for the Buccaneers. The Giants look like they have a new stud at WR, Marion Manningham. If he turns out to be legit then the Giants have a great chance to be Super Bowl contenders. One thing they have to figure out is their red zone offense. You can't always count on the big play.

Prediction: New York Giants 34, Tampa Bay 17

Cleveland (0-2) at Baltimore (2-0), Baltimore favored by 13 1/2

The Ravens appear to finally have a legitimate offense. QB Joe Flacco has looked great through two weeks, and RB Willis McGahee appears re-motivated. The Ravens are playing with a certain swagger right now, that has me thinking this team has a real chance at being champions at the end of the season.

Prediction: Baltimore 28, Cleveland 7

Jacksonville (0-2) at Houston (1-1), Houston favored by 3

The Texans are a tough team to figure out. They look completely listless at home against the Jets in Week 1, and then in Week 2 their offense explodes on the road against the Titans. If Jacksonville falls to 0-3, coach Jack Del Rio will need to really start updating his resume.

Prediction: Houston 24, Jacksonville 14

Chicago (1-1) at Seattle (1-1), Chicago favored by 1

It is still not clear if Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck will play on Sunday. Even if he does play he will not have practiced all week, and will still probably be hurting. Too many question marks for me to pick the Seahawks. One quick fantasy football note, Chicago, start getting RB Matt Forte more touches!!!!

Prediction: Chicago 20, Seattle 10

New Orleans (2-0) at Buffalo (1-1), New Orleans favored by 6

The Saints have looked like a juggernaut so far, putting up more than 40 points in each of the first two weeks. For the Bills, WR Terrell Owens got in the end zone against Tampa last week, and is hopefully starting to develop a chemistry with QB Trent Edwards. RB Fred Jackson has taken advantage of his opportunity with Marshawn Lynch suspended and has been carrying the Bills on his back. I think the Bills spring the upset.

Prediction: Buffalo 27, New Orleans 24

Denver (2-0) at Oakland (1-1), Oakland favored by 1 1/2

The Broncos are perhaps the fraudiest 2-0 team in the history of EVAR. The Raiders won last week despite QB Jamarcus Russell being quite possibly the worst starting quarterback in the history of EVAR. The Broncos defense has been surprisingly stout the first two weeks, but so has the Raiders defense. When two teams are pretty evenly matched, go with the home field advantage.

Prediction: Oakland 17, Denver 14

Miami (0-2) at San Diego (1-1), San Diego favored by 6

Miami started 0-2 last season and recovered to go 11-5 and win the AFC East. So they don't have to panic just yet. However, if they lose this one, then it will definitely be time to panic. WR Ted Ginn needs to learn how to catch. He plays scared in big situations, which I think is causing him to drop passes he should be catching. San Diego has problems of their own, with their offensive line being banged up, and missing Jamal Williams on defense. I would pick Miami, but don't see San Diego falling to 0-2 at home.

Prediction: San Diego 30, Miami 27

Last Week Against the Spread: 14-2
Overall Against the Spread: 24-8

Last Week Straight Up: 10-6
Overall Straight Up: 22-10

Cram Session - Week 4

It is another pretty lame weekend in college football as far as marquee games. The only game pitting ranked teams against each other is an ACC battle, as #9 Miami travels to Blacksburg to take on #11 Virginia Tech. The Miami bandwagon is filling up fast after their victories over Florida State and Georgia Tech. Not many people are giving the Hokies a chance in this one, except maybe me.

Games That Matter to Me That May Not Matter to You

Notre Dame (2-1) at Purdue (1-2)

Notre Dame survived by the skin of their teeth against Michigan State and now travel to Purdue to take on the Boilermakers. The big question for Notre Dame will be how much QB Jimmy Clausen's turf toe will affect him, and how much will the offense miss prolific WR Michael Floyd? I think later on they will really miss Floyd but the Boilermakers aren't very good, especially on defense. Purdue, much like Michigan State last week, is coming off an embarrassing home loss to a MAC team. The Boilermakers are led by RB Ralph Bolden and QB Joey Elliott. Elliott has struggled so far this year, with 4 TDs and 5 INTs. I don't think the Irish will blow out Purdue, as their defense is too terrible right now, but they will get the W.

Prediction: Notre Dame 38, Purdue 28

Top 25

#1 Florida (3-0, 1-0) at Kentucky (2-0, 0-0)

As I predicted the Gators didn't destroy Tennessee, shocking the media. Kentucky had an exhilarating win against rival Louisville last week, and now hope to give the Gators a scare at home.

Prediction: Florida 37, Kentucky 17

UTEP (1-2) at #2 Texas (3-0)

The Longhorns got more than they expected from Texas Tech last week. That won't be the case here.

Prediction: Texas 52, UTEP 12

Arkansas (1-1, 0-1) at #3 Alabama (3-0, 0-0)

I missed on my Arkansas upset pick last week. The Razorbacks scored plenty, but gave up plenty more. All signs point to a Crimson Tide rout, but I think Arkansas hangs in there.

Prediction: Alabama 49, Arkansas 36

#4 Mississippi (2-0, 0-0) at South Carolina (2-1, 0-1)

My upset special! I think the Rebels are highly overrated, and I think Spurrier has a little bit of coaching magic left.

Prediction: South Carolina 27, Mississippi 24

Iowa (3-0, 0-0) at #5 Penn State (3-0, 0-0)

The Nittany Lions will be looking for revenge after the Hawkeyes killed their National championship dreams last season. In fact, the Hawkeyes haven't lost since that game, winning 7 in a row. I think things will come full circle Saturday night.

Prediction: Penn State 20, Iowa 16

#6 California (3-0, 0-0) at Oregon (2-1, 0-0)

Oregon knocked off the Utah Utes at home last week and will be looking for another upset at home against Pac-10 rival Cal. RB Jahvid Best is going to eat up the Ducks defense, and allow the Golden Bears to escape Eugene undefeated.

Prediction: California 33, Oregon 23

#7 LSU (3-0, 1-0) at Mississippi State (2-1, 1-1)

Despite being 3-0, LSU hasn't been very impressive. The Tigers can't look ahead to their game next week against Georgia, or they can be beaten by the Bulldogs. I don't think they will, but the questions will still remain about them after this one.

Prediction: LSU 27, Mississippi State 19

#8 Boise State (3-0) at Bowling Green (1-2)

Boise took Fresno State to the woodshed, hanging 51 on them on the road. Bowling Green played Missouri tough a few weeks ago, but I don't think that same thing will happen against the Broncos.

Prediction: Boise State 41, Bowling Green 17

#9 Miami (2-0, 2-0) at #11 Virginia Tech (2-1, 0-0)

This game will be tough for me to watch as I can't stand both of these teams. However, the rate at which the Hurricanes bandwagon is filling up is disgusting. Yes, Miami beat the crap out of Georgia Tech, but maybe Georgia Tech isn't that good? But they beat Florida State is the next thing the bandwagoners will say. You mean the same Florida State team that barely beat Jacksonville State, but now everyone loves again because they crushed BYU? No one knows for sure how good this Miami team is. The Hokies are atrocious offensively, but with their special teams and defense they still somehow win games. I think their defense will cause Canes QB Jacory Harris fits, and I think the Hokies win this one.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 21, Miami 19

Washington State (1-2, 0-1) at #12 USC (2-1, 0-1)

USC had their annual choke last week against Washington. The Trojans may still be without QB Matt Barkley, but they could have me at QB and they would kill the Cougars.

Prediction: USC 45, Washington State 7

Illinois (1-1, 0-0) at #13 Ohio State (2-1, 0-0)

Juice Williams returns to Columbus, two years after he won there and seemingly put Illinois back on the college football map. However, the Illini didn't make a bowl game last year and were pounded by Missouri in the opener this year. The Buckeyes and QB Terrelle Pryor will enjoy the beat down they give Illinois this weekend.

Prediction: Ohio State 43, Illinois 20

Fresno State (1-2) at #14 Cincinnati (3-0)

The Bearcats are looking legit, especially after winning at Oregon State, a tough place to win. Fresno State screwed my record with their loss at home to Boise, so I am picking them to lose by a lot to show them my wrath.

Prediction: Cincinnati 47, Fresno State 24

#15 TCU (2-0) at Clemson (2-1)

Sometimes talent doesn't win games in college football, atmosphere does. That is the only reason I think Clemson upsets TCU this weekend.

Prediction: Clemson 34, TCU 33

Grambling State (2-1) at #16 Oklahoma State (2-1)

Cowboys win, and then they finally go on the road for their first road game next week.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 38, Grambling State 16

Texas Tech (2-1) at #17 Houston (2-0)

The Cougars will try to knock off another Big 12 team but this time they will be favored and at home. Texas Tech played Texas much better than I expected last weekend. I think they break through and get the win against Houston.

Prediction: Texas Tech 48, Houston 41

South Florida (3-0) at #18 Florida State (2-1)

I have no clue what to make of Florida State. They beat the ever living crap out of BYU on the road last weekend, a week after barely surviving Jacksonville State at home. South Florida just lost senior QB Matt Grothe for the year. If they had Grothe I might pick the upset, however, can't see their new QB (too lazy to look up his name) winning in Tallahassee.

Prediction: Florida State 26, South Florida 23

Colorado State (3-0, 0-0) at #19 BYU (2-1, 0-0)

BYU saw their BCS hopes disappear last weekend and now have to get their minds ready for Mountain West Conference action. They face the undefeated Rams, not the kind of team you want to see a week after being shell shocked. I think the Cougars will come out flat to start but turn things around just in time to get the win.

Prediction: BYU 31, Colorado State 26

Southern Miss (3-0) at #20 Kansas (3-0)

Southern Miss barely beat Virginia last weekend, having to come from behind to get the victory. The Kansas Jayhawks football team has been busy fighting with the Kansas basketball team, which makes me wonder how much they have been concentrating on this game. They can get away with overlooking Southern Miss but they better have their minds straight come November 14.

Prediction: Kansas 47, Southern Miss 30

Arizona State (2-0) at #21 Georgia (2-1)

In recent weeks Georgia has discovered they have an offense but have also discovered that they don't have a defense. Arizona State really has no idea what they have since they played cupcakes in their first two games. After this one, they will know they aren't very good.

Prediction: Georgia 31, Arizona State 19

#22 North Carolina (3-0, 0-0) at Georgia Tech (2-1, 1-1)

Georgia Tech ate some humble pie after their embarrassing loss at Miami. Despite the Heels being 3-0, I am still not sold on them.

Prediction: Georgia Tech 28, North Carolina 21

Indiana (3-0, 0-0) at #23 Michigan (3-0, 0-0)

Michigan will surpass their win total from last season with a victory here.

Prediction: Michigan 34, Indiana 20

#24 Washington (2-1, 1-0) at Stanford (2-1, 1-0)

Amazing what the Huskies can do when they actually have a good coach! However, this game screams let down and when something screams, you should listen.

Prediction: Stanford 24, Washington 14

Louisiana-Lafayette (2-1) at #25 Nebraska (2-1)

The October 8th showdown at Missouri looms but first the Cornhuskers need to get the taste of their bitter loss to Virginia Tech out of their mouths. Lousiana-Lafayette should be the perfect tonic.

Prediction: Nebraska 38, Louisiana-Lafayette 14

Last Week: 17-6
Overall: 52-12

The Week That Was

I almost cried after Nebraska lost to Virginia Tech 16-15 on Saturday. The loss was that brutal to take. It was made even more brutal because Notre Dame had lost to Michigan the week before in similar fashion. The Huskers had the game won and pretty much choked it away. After shutting down the Hokies offense all afternoon, they decided to not play everyone back, despite the Hokies needing to go the length of the field, and were beat deep. Losing that way would have been bad enough, but then the Huskers actually pushed Tech back to the 11. Then they allowed Hokie QB Tyrod Taylor to have an eternity, as they had for most of the game, and he threw the TD pass to win the game. Even more befuddling was how 4 or 5 Huskers just sat there and looked at him for about 5 seconds. Nebraska had so many chances in the red zone but couldn't score touchdowns and it bit them in the ass. As a program the Huskers needed that win so badly and were so close.

The Huskers loss pretty much took all the joy out of Notre Dame ending their hex against Michigan State. I was counting on the Irish to blow it in some way but they luckily had Michigan State play stupidly in Irish territory and cost themselves the game. Despite the win, there was some real bad news for Notre Dame. WR Michael Floyd, their best player, broke his collarbone and will likely miss the rest of the season. The offense did play well in the second half without him, but that could potentially be a huge loss.

The San Francisco 49ers might be legit. They improved to not only 2-0 overall, but 2-0 in the division, manhandling the Seattle Seahawks 23-10. RB Frank Gore looked like 2006 and 2007 self, busting off two huge runs and rushing for over 200 yards. The defense knocked Seahawks QB Matt Hasselbeck out of the game. The 49ers go to Minnesota on Sunday and take on the 2-0 Vikings, going to be a great barometer for how good the 49ers really are.

The Washington Redskins barely survived the lowly St. Louis Rams at home, winning 9-7. The offense moved the ball well all game but bogged down each time in the red zone. The defense played well overall, with Albert Haynesworth and Brian Orakpo having strong games. The secondary looks to be an issue though, as the Rams converted way too many third down passes. It almost seems inevitable that the Skins will lose to the Lions on Sunday and be the team to break the Lions 20 game losing streak.

The Hail Mary - Week 2

Week 2 has a bunch of intriguing games. For some dumb reason CBS doesn't have a doubleheader in the Washington Metro area this weekend so I will only get to see 3 of these really intriguing games. New England at New York at 1:00 would be the perfect counter to the Washington Redskins/St. Louis Rams stinker. Even worse news, I hear about this new NFL Network Red Zone channel, sounds great, but unfortunately it is not available on Cox Cable. Blargh.

Games That I Will Be Watching

St. Louis (0-1) at Washington (0-1), Washington favored by 10

The scheduling Gods have once again attempted to do the Redskins a favor and sent the Rams to Washington. Last season, the Redskins couldn't take advantage, and gave away the game to St. Louis, a loss that they never really recovered from. St. Louis will not only be looking to win this game, they will be looking to score their first points of the season after losing 28-0 to Seattle. If Redskins QB Jason Campbell can't have a big day against this team, then even his apologists will have to admit that a fork should be stuck in him. I think the Redskins win but can't trust them to win by more than 10.

Prediction: Washington 23, St. Louis 14

Baltimore (1-0) at San Diego (1-0), San Diego favored by 3

Ravens QB Joe Flacco had a great game against Kansas City and has Ravens fans talking about maybe having a real NFL offense this season. I think how he and the offense perform on the road against the Chargers will be a better indicator. The Chargers looked average against Oakland on Monday night but still came away with a win. I think QB Philip Rivers will have his troubles with the Ravens defense but Flacco will have more.

Prediction: San Diego 24, Baltimore 20

New York Giants (1-0) at Dallas (1-0), New York Giants favored by 3

The Cowboys officially open the new Texas Stadium on Sunday night against the Giants. Not only will the game be fun to watch, seeing if the punters hit the video board will be the other interesting aspect of this NFC Beast clash. I am still not sold on the Giants, although I admit to being surprised that it was their passing game and not their running game that led them to defeat the Skins. The Cowboys looked good against Tampa Bay, but Tampa is going to be one of the worst teams in the league. I think the crowd will be a factor in this one and the Cowboys debut their stadium in style.

Prediction: Dallas 21, New York Giants 14

Indianapolis (1-0) at Miami (0-1), Indianapolis favored by 3

As expected the Colts had to claw and fight their way to win over Jacksonville while Miami's offense looked horrendous at Atlanta. On the bright side for the Dolphins their run defense performed admirably. The fluke talk has already started surrounding the Dolphins and an 0-2 start will give that talk even more fire.

Prediction: Indianapolis 20, Miami 13

Rest of Week 2

Carolina (0-1) at Atlanta (1-0), Atlanta favored by 6 1/2

Panthers QB Jake Delhomme is simply awful. He has now thrown 9 INTs in his last 2 games. Somehow he is still the starting QB. The Falcons put out 5 new defensive starters last Sunday but looked much better than they were last year. I really wish I could have my Panthers winning the NFC South prediction back.

Prediction: Atlanta 28, Carolina 13

Minnesota (1-0) at Detroit (0-1). Minnesota favored by 10

A new coach, new QB, lots of new players on the defense, equaled same old Lions in Week 1. Vikings RB Adrian Peterson added to his legend last weekend against the Browns, and QB Brett Favre managed a game, for maybe the first time in his career. I think Favre will be able to have a little bit more fun this weekend.

Prediction: Minnesota 38, Detroit 20

Cincinnati (0-1) at Green Bay (1-0), Green Bay favored by 9

The Bengals could only manage 7 points on the Denver defense, and then lost in excruciating fashion. Kind of wishing I could have my Bengals make the playoffs prediction back as well. However, as I predicted Green Bay's defense looked much improved, and that was without rookie DT BJ Raji. A bonus prediction, WR Chad Ochocinco will get to make his Lambeau Leap.

Prediction: Green Bay 27, Cincinnati 19

Houston (0-1) at Tennessee (0-1), Tennessee favored by 7

The Texans embarrassed themselves at home against the Jets, while the Titans performed admirably in Pittsburgh. I think the Texans will put up a much better showing this weekend, but it won't be enough on the road.

Prediction: Tennessee 20, Houston 17

Oakland (0-1) at Kansas City (0-1), Kansas City favored by 3

Both of these cellar-dwellers had promising performances in Week 1, but as is familiar for them, they lost. We still may have to wait on QB Matt Cassel's debut for the Chiefs, while the Raiders are probably wishing they never had to debut QB Jamarcus Russell. I think they also want that Darrius Heyward-Bey pick back. The addition of Richard Seymour looked great on Monday night against San Diego, and I think the Raiders defense will be the difference in this one.

Prediction: Oakland 28, Kansas City 25

New England (1-0) at New York Jets (1-0), New England favored by 5 1/2

I have to give Jets QB Mark Sanchez props, he looked impressive in his debut against the Texans. The Jets are desperate to win this game and have been telling the media all week about it, including their coach Rex Ryan. The Patriots should really be 0-1, but lucked out and stole a game away against Buffalo. The Patriots can't afford to start off slow on the road here. I like them to win with a last second field goal.

Prediction: New England 24, New York Jets 21

New Orleans (1-0) at Philadelphia (1-0), Line is EVEN

No line for this game due to the uncertainty of whether Eagles QB Donovan McNabb will play. The man has broken ribs so I would be seriously shocked if he does play. I think QB Kevin Kolb may start the game, but he will be pulled for ineffectiveness, allowing QB Jeff Garcia to make his Eagles return. Although the Eagles defense looked fantastic against Carolina, they had Jake Delhomme throwing ducks to them all game. This game will be a true test, as the Saints offense, led by QB Drew Brees is sick. If the Eagles had McNabb I would go with them, but I can't see Kolb or Garcia leading them to a win here.

Prediction: New Orleans 31, Philadelphia 26

Arizona (0-1) at Jacksonville (0-1), Jacksonville favored by 3 1/2

The Cardinals certainly appear to be headed for a Super Bowl loss hangover after a listless pre-season and a listless loss at home to the 49ers. An 0-2 start appears to be on the horizon as we know how much the Cardinals hate 1:00 eastern kickoffs.

Prediction: Jacksonville 24, Arizona 16

Seattle (1-0) at San Francisco (1-0), San Francisco favored by 1 1/2

I am trying to avoid getting too hyped but the win over Arizona, especially the play of the defense was very encouraging. If the Niners can carry that momentum to this game, not only would a 2-0 start be huge, it would be a 2-0 start in the division. The Seahawks got to feast on the carcass of the Rams, but this will be a true test for QB Matt Hasselbeck and company. QB Shaun Hill just has to keep up his steady play, make sure RB Frank Gore gets enough touches, and the 49ers can win this game. Don't you wish you could be a part of this you bum, Crabtree?

Prediction: San Francisco 23, Seattle 19

Pittsburgh (1-0) at Chicago (0-1), Pittsburgh favored by 3

Bears QB Jay Cutler's debut was a massive dud as they lost and he threw 4 INTs. The Bears game plan was awful against the Packers. They completely ignored RB Matt Forte and TE Greg Olsen. The Steelers won their opener but had a huge loss on the defense with the injury to S Troy Polamalu. The Madden curse has to be real. Call me crazy but I think Cutler will respond with a strong game in the Bears home opener. If the Steelers had Polamalu I would have no doubts picking them, but I think the Steelers will really miss him, much more than the Bears will miss LB Brian Urlacher.

Prediction: Chicago 18, Pittsburgh 14

Cleveland (0-1) at Denver, (1-0), Denver favored by 3

The Broncos are terrible, yet they will probably be 2-0 after this game. Its OK, the schedule gets much tougher soon enough.

Prediction: Denver 28, Cleveland 17

Against the Spread: 10-6
Straight Up: 12-4

Cram Session - Week 3

No real marquee games headline the schedule this weekend, but as a Huskers and Fighting Irish fan, Saturday will be a huge day. Nebraska tries to win on the road against a ranked team for the first time since the Tom Osborne era ended. Notre Dame is trying to avoid their season from becoming another disappointing one, and also trying to beat Michigan State at home for the first time since 1993.

Games That Matter to Me That May Not Matter to You

Michigan State (1-1) at Notre Dame (1-1)

Unfortunately, I have had to bring this section back after the Irish's heartbreaking loss at Michigan last weekend dropped them out of the Top 25. Even before last week's loss this was a huge game for Notre Dame. The Spartans have owned them at Notre Dame Stadium, and the Irish have to be desperate to end their home losing streak to them. Hopefully, the Irish players don't take this game for granted, despite the Spartans embarrassing home loss to Central Michigan last weekend. The Spartans biggest offensive weapon seems to be WR Blair White, who already has 16 receptions and 2 TDs this year. The Notre Dame defense was eaten alive last weekend, so hopefully they play much better this week. They only really need to play marginally because the Notre Dame offense has been on a tear. I think the Spartans keep this game close, but Clausen leads a game winning drive late.

Prediction:Notre Dame 35, Michigan State 28

Top 25

Tennessee (1-1) at #1 Florida (2-0)

Florida fans, as well as coach Urban Meyer had this marked on their calendars as soon as Vols coach Lane Kiffin incorrectly tried to rat on Florida for recruiting violations. People are expecting Meyer to run up the score as much as possible. I think this game ends up being closer than people think, but the Gators still win by a healthy margin.

Prediction: Florida 34, Tennessee 17

Texas Tech (2-0) at #2 Texas (2-0)

Last year the Red Raiders beat Texas on a last second TD by WR Michael Crabtree and ended the Longhorns National Championship hopes. The Longhorns will be looking for revenge this year. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, they will be in Austin this year, and without QB Graham Harrell and Crabtree.

Prediction: Texas 48, Texas Tech 24

#3 USC (2-0) at Washington (1-1)

Yippee! Washington won a game! The only problem was that it came against Idaho. They face quite the leap in competition this week from the Trojans. The Trojans knocked off Ohio State, due to the heroics of freshman QB Matt Barkley and RB Joe McKnight. I think the Huskies keep this close for a bit, then the Trojans put the petal to the metal.

Prediction: USC 31, Washington 14

North Texas (1-1) at #4 Alabama (2-0)

Alabama is just biding their time until their SEC schedule kicks off.

Prediction: Alabama 42, North Texas 13

Temple (0-1) at #5 Penn State (2-0)

Penn State is just biding their team until the Big 10 schedule kicks off.

Prediction: Penn State 40, Temple 7

Southeastern Louisiana (2-0) at #5 Mississippi (1-0)

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ. Some real boring games in the Top 10 this weekend.

Prediction: Mississippi 52, Southeastern Louisiana 9

Florida State (1-1) at #7 BYU (2-0)

The Seminoles barely beat Jacksonville State at home last weekend and now have to travel to Provo and face a hot BYU team. Things are going to get ugly for Bobby Bowden, dagumitt.

Prediction: BYU 35, Florida State 21

#8 California (2-0) at Minnesota (2-0)

A 12 PM start time proved problematic for Cal last year, and they get one again this year as they travel to Minnesota. I think this game will be closer than the experts think, but I am not confident enough in the Golden Gophers to pick an upset.

Prediction: California 30, Minnesota 27

Louisiana-Lafayette (2-0) at #9 LSU (2-0)

Louisiana-Lafayette knocked off Kansas State at home last weekend. Unfortunately, beating Kansas State would have been impressive about 6 years ago. LSU hasn't looked that great through the first two weeks, and probably won't look that great here either. However, LSU fans won't be able to be too upset, 3-0 is all you can ask for at this point.

Prediction: LSU 38, Louisiana Lafayette 15

#10 Boise State (2-0) at Fresno State (1-1)

The Broncos will have the hands full at Fresno State. They will have their hands so full that I am calling for the upset.

Prediction: Fresno State 28, Boise State 26

#11 Ohio State (1-1) at Toledo (1-1)

Toledo just crushed Colorado at home, but much like Louisiana-Lafayette's home victory against Kansas State, it would have been more impressive 6 years ago. The Buckeyes are looking to get back on track after last weekend's disappointing loss to USC. The Rockets keep it close for a bit but Terrell Pryor runs the Buckeyes to victory.

Prediction: Ohio State 34, Toledo 19

Tulsa (2-0) at #12 Oklahoma (1-1)

This is another game where some will just assume an Oklahoma win but with the Sooners missing QB Sam Bradford and TE Jermaine Greshman, they could have some problems. Tulsa has a high powered offense and has the firepower to keep up with the Sooners offense, just not enough.

Prediction: Oklahoma 34, Tulsa 24

#19 Nebraska (2-0) at #13 Virginia Tech (1-1)

I was desperate to get tickets to this game as it was a great chance to see the Huskers live and in person for the first time. However, it was not meant to be and instead I will have to watch in the comfort of my Dad's living room on his 60-inch TV. Not bad. I am really torn with this game. The Huskers have been abysmal on the road against good teams over the last decade but I like what Pelini has done with them so far. Virginia Tech's offense still doesn't impress me, even if they put up over 50 on cream puff Marshall. The Huskers defense will have to play as well as they did in the Gator Bowl against Clemson. The Hokies do have two legit RBs in Ryan Williams and David Wilson that the Huskers will have to limit. The other key will be how QB Zac Lee plays in his first big time game. I will be disappointed with a loss but will still feel good if the Huskers stay competitive throughout. I think they do.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 27, Nebraska 24

#14 Georgia Tech (2-0, 1-0) at #20 Miami (1-0, 1-0)

These two meet Thursday night in an early ACC battle. Georgia Tech nearly blew a huge lead at home to Clemson last week, while the Canes are two weeks removed from their win at Florida State. I think the Canes will be better this year but Florida State is looking pretty fraudalicious right now. I think the Yellow Jackets make a statement on the road, and limit Miami QB Jacory Harris.

Prediction: Georgia Tech 33, Miami 30

Texas State (1-0) at #15 TCU (2-0)

The game against Angelo State probably didn't get Texas State prepared for this one.

Prediction: TCU 65, Texas State 19

Rice (0-2) at #16 Oklahoma State (1-1)

Oklahoma State proved to be frauds on Saturday, which means they will be in a bad mood for Rice's visit. Rice already got the beat down from Texas Tech, what's another Big 12 beat down?

Prediction: Oklahoma State 40, Rice 13

#17 Cincinnati (2-0) at Oregon State (2-0)

Tough game for the Bearcats. RB Jacquizz Rodgers will lead the Beavers to the upset, despite the valiant effort of Bearcats QB Tony Pike.

Prediction: Oregon State 31, Cincinnati 30

#18 Utah (2-0) at Oregon (1-1)

This will be a good weekend for Oregon schools, as both will earn upsets at home against ranked teams.

Prediction: Oregon 37, Utah 27

Duke (1-1) at #22 Kansas (2-0)

No, this is not March Madness, these two are colliding on the gridiron. Unlike the Huskers who schedule Top 25 teams out of conference, this is the Jayhawks idea of a tough non-conference game.

Prediction: Kansas 45, Duke 20

#23 Georgia (1-1, 1-0) at Arkansas (1-0, 0-0)

Surprisingly, South Carolina vs. Georgia turned into a shootout. I am still very unimpressed with the Bulldogs even though they did manage to beat the Gamecocks. I think Bobby Petrino is starting to improve the Razorbacks and they pull off the mini upset.

Prediction: Arkansas 31, Georgia 28

East Carolina (1-1) at #24 North Carolina (2-0)

I almost hit on my upset call of UCONN beating North Carolina, until the Huskies choked away the game. I thought about calling for another upset here but East Carolina was beaten pretty soundly by a mediocre West Virginia team.

Prediction: North Carolina 21, East Carolina 17

Eastern Michigan (0-2) at #25 Michigan (2-0)

BOOOOOOOOOOO Michigan. Especially QB Tate Forcier.

Prediction: Michigan 34, Eastern Michigan 13

Last Week: 18-3
Overall: 35-6

The Week That Was

Mondays suck but they are at least tolerable for the next few months because of the excitement that carries over from football weekends. Saturday was depressing as Notre Dame blew a game they should have won against Michigan. The main culprit for the loss is head coach Charlie Weis, who managed the game clock at the end like a 4-year old. Sure, RB Armando Allen was hurt on the first down run but who cares? We didn't need to score on that drive. We needed to run the ball two more times and make Michigan burn their timeouts. The referees were also atrocious. Allen had a touchdown called back despite their not being inconclusive evidence that he stepped out of bounds, which was what was necessary to overturn the initial ruling of touchdown. That ended up being a difference making play in the game as the Irish had to settle for a field goal instead on that drive. Hopefully, the Big 10 officials assigned to this weekend's home game against Michigan State are a tad more competent. The defense looked dreadful, which is discouraging after they looked so good against Nevada. The offense looks as good as it did in Weis' first two years when he had Brady Quinn, Darius Walker, and Jeff Smarzijda. There is still hope for a very good season, but a win at home against the Spartans on Saturday is a must.

Nebraska beat up on Arkansas State, making them 2 for 2 against bad teams. The defense played a little better this week, and QB Zac Lee was tremendous, throwing for 340 yards, 4 TDs and 0 INTs. This Saturday, Nebraska travels to Blacksburg, looking for revenge against the Chokies. I will have much more on this game in Thursday's Cram Session.

I was in football heaven yesterday as NFL Sundays returned. Not surprisingly, the Washington Redskins offense looked like poo with Jason Campbell under center, as the Skins fell to the Giants 23-17. The Giants were missing three starters but the Redskins still couldn't score an offensive touchdown until garbage time. I will be very happy when the Jason Campbell era is over. The San Francisco 49ers won a real tough game at Arizona and have given me some optimisim for this season. The defense manhandled Cardinals QB Kurt Waner, and 49ers QB Shaun Hill was clutch when he needed to be. The Philadelphia Eagles destroyed the Carolina Panthers and their sorry excuse for a quarterback, Jake Delhomme. Eagles QB Donovan McNabb suffered broken ribs but early word is he will play Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. McNabb annoys me to no end sometimes but he is one tough hombre. The defense was the biggest concern for the Eagles coming into the season, but they looked great Sunday. They will face a true test against the offensive juggernaut that the Saints will be bringing to Philadelphia. The Minnesota Vikings struggled for a half with the hapless Cleveland Browns, before RB Adrian Peterson took over. Purple Jesus might not be good enough of a nickname for the amazing Peterson. Vikings QB Brett Favre managed the game, which is exactly what will be needed of him this year. They don't need gunslinger Brett, they need a smart Favre and hopefully he can do that. WR Percy Harvin showed some flashes of brilliance and is an exciting addition to the Vikings offense.

Cram Session - Week 2

The game everyone is talking about this weekend is USC traveling to the Shoe to take on Ohio State. That should be a fun game for about the first 10 minutes, but the best game of the weekend is Notre Dame at Michigan. Both schools had confidence inspiring wins last weekend, providing this game with the luster it deserves. The rest of the Top 25 schedule is pretty week as most teams schedule cream puffs before getting into their conference schedules.

Troy (0-1) at #1 Florida (1-0)

Florida's embarrassing non-conference slate continues. Starters will be done by the 3rd quarter.

Prediction: Florida 52, Troy 17

#2 Texas (1-0) at Wyoming (1-0)

I give Texas props for the fact that they will travel to some strange places for road games. This won't be a tough test, Wyoming only beat Weber State by a touchdown at home last week.

Prediction: Texas 55, Wyoming 21

#3 USC (1-0) at #8 Ohio State (1-0)

This is Ohio State's shot at revenge after last season's debacle at USC. Before last week I thought they had a good chance, especially with USC sending a freshman, QB Matt Barkley to the Shoe. Then I saw Ohio State struggle mightily at home against Navy. Not that Navy is a bad team, in fact, they are quite underrated. However, they are nowhere near the level of talent that USC possesses. I think this one could get ugly pretty fast.

Prediction: USC 31, Ohio State 14

Florida International (0-0) at #4 Alabama (1-0)

Alabama dominated the overrated Virginia Tech Hokies just as I suspected. As for this game, do I even need to say anything?

Prediction: Alabama 44, Florida International 13

Houston (1-0) at #5 Oklahoma State (1-0)

This could be a tougher game for the Cowboys than people think. Houston can score some points and I don't think they will be a push over. The Cowboys will be feeling pretty good about themselves after beating Georgia last week, and may come out a little flat.

Prediction: Oklahoma State 34, Houston 24

Syracuse (0-1) at #7 Penn State (1-0)

Syracuse QB Greg Paulus played decent in his first game, except for a backbreaking interception in OT. However, that game was against Minnesota and in the friendly confines of the Carrier Dome. Things are going to get ugly real fast at for him at Happy Valley.

Prediction: Penn State 42, Syracuse 10

#9 BYU (1-0) at Tulane (0-1)

BYU is riding high after their upset of Choklahoma in Dallas. A lot of people are saying they wouldn't have won the game if Oklahoma QB Sam Bradford had played the entire way. That may be true, but it wasn't like the Sooners were killing BYU before Bradford left. I think BYU will suffer a bit of a letdown, but Tulane is terrible.

Prediction: BYU 34, Tulane 16

Eastern Washington (1-0) at #10 California (1-0)

Cal blasted pathetic ACC team Maryland at home, maybe Eastern Washington can give them more of a struggle.

Prediction: California 48, Eastern Washington 10

Vanderbilt (1-0, 0-0) at #11 LSU (1-0, 0-0)

SEC play kicks off this weekend with one of the games being Vanderbilt traveling to Baton Rouge. LSU struggled against Washington, but I think that was more because Washington is better than their zero win Ty Willingham squad from last year. If LSU struggles at home with Vandy, then it might be time to worry.

Prediction: LSU 27, Vanderbilt 13

Miami (Ohio) (0-1) at #12 Boise State (1-0)

Boise State dominated Oregon in front of the nation last Thursday. Well aside from one of their players getting knocked the f out. This should be another dominating performance.

Prediction: Boise State 49, Miami (Ohio) 9

Idaho State (0-1) at #13 Oklahoma (0-1)

Sooners QB Landry Jones makes his start. The offensive line still needs time to gel for the Sooners and this is the kind of practice game that can help them.

Prediction: Oklahoma 48, Idaho State 6

Marshall (1-0) at #14 Virginia Tech (0-1)

The Hokies were outclassed by Bama last weekend, with only a kickoff return making the score look deceivingly close. Marshall had all they could handle from Southern Illinois, so they are almost on par with an ACC team. Tech loves to beat up on the little guys.

Prediction: Virginia Tech 28, Marshall 10

#16 TCU (0-0) at Virginia (0-1)

Last weekend, Virginia lost at home to William and Mary. Bahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahah. At least getting stomped by TCU is expected.

Prediction: TCU 38, Virginia 15

#17 Utah (1-0) at San Jose State (0-1)

San Jose State was drilled by USC last weekend but since this game is at home I think they can give the Utes a battle.

Prediction: Utah 30, San Jose State 23

#18 Notre Dame (1-0) at Michigan (1-0)

Finally, the game of the weekend. Notre Dame looked almost perfect against Nevada. Sure, Nevada isn't that great but Notre Dame made them look horrendous. The defense looked great and the offense was firing on all cylinders. I am excited but that could all change if the Irish lay an egg at Michigan. The Big House doesn't intimidate me and I don't think it will intimidate an older Irish team. The last time a lot of these players played there was two years ago and they were freshman and sophomores. Michigan shut them out and outclassed Notre Dame in every way. I think that sour taste still remains for a lot of the Notre Dame players. I think they come out aggressive, and put the rest of the college football nation on notice with a strong win.

Prediction: Notre Dame 31, Michigan 21

#19 North Carolina (1-0) at Connecticut (1-0)

For some reason I have a gut feeling that UCONN could pull off the upset. I am not sold on the Tar Heels, probably has to do with their conference affiliation.

Prediction: Connecticut 28, North Carolina 27

South Carolina (1-0) at #21 Georgia (0-1)

Looks like I completely underestimated the losses of Matthew Stafford and Knowshon Moreno for the Bulldogs. After an impressive first drive against Oklahoma State, the offense fell apart. South Carolina's offense looked like crap at NC State, we could have another 3-2 game on our hands here.

Prediction: Georgia 9, South Carolina 6

Arkansas State (1-0) at #22 Nebraska (1-0)

The Huskers clobbered Florida Atlantic in Week 1 and had some positive signs. RB Roy Helu Jr. looked real good and seems to be solidifying himself as the number one RB. QB Zac Lee had an encouraging first start to his career. The defense's play was a little disconcerting. They only allowed 3 points but also gave up 358 yards of offense to Florida Atlantic. This is the Huskers last tune up before they travel to Blacksburg.

Prediction: Nebraska 34, Arkansas State 17

Southeast Missouri State (1-0) at #23 Cincinnati (1-0)

Cincinnati quickly put to rest any thoughts that Rutgers might be good this season, blowing them out on their home field on Monday. Most impressive in that game was Bearcats QB Tony Pick, who threw for 3 TDs and 362 yards. Southeast Missouri State will get quite the rude awakening from playing Quincy (who?) last weekend to the Bearcats this weekend.

Prediction: Cincinnati 44, Southeast Missouri State 12

#24 Kansas (1-0) at UTEP (0-1)

Triston, if you read this, leave something in the comments about this game. I have no idea what to say.

Prediction: Kansas 42, UTEP 21

Bowling Green (1-0) at #25 Missouri (1-0)

Missouri crushed some people's sleeper team, Illinois last week, earning them a spot in the Top 25. Looking at the Tigers schedule, they should be 4-0 when they host Nebraska in prime time on Thursday night.

Prediction: Missouri 30, Bowling Green 10

Last Week: 17-3
Overall: 17-3

The Hail Mary - Week 1

I am giddy as a school girl right now. The reason for my giddiness is because the NFL season is finally upon us. After six long months, the greatest league in the history of EVAR is back. The return of the NFL also means it is the return of my weekly Hail Mary. I have decided to add a little wrinkle to The Hail Mary this year. In addition to picking the games straight up, I will also pick against the spread. Let it be known that I don't condone gambling in any way (unless you are really good at it).

Games That I Will Be Watching

Tennessee at Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh favored by 6

The NFL continues its newest tradition of having the defending Super Bowl champions open up the season at home. These two teams were the best the AFC had to offer last year. Their is some bad blood between the two, stemming from the Titans stomping on some Terrible Towels after defeating the Steelers in Tennessee last year. I think the Titans are in for a down year. QB Kerry Collins is going to struggle with the tough early schedule, and I think we could see Vince Young starting by Week 7.

Prediction: Pittsburgh 23, Tennessee 10

Dallas at Tampa Bay, Dallas favored by 6

The Metro area gets some really crappy 1:00 games. I would much rather be able to see the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Carolina Panthers than this crap. The Buccaneers should be awful this year, no matter how good Byron Leftwich was for a half last year. I expect the Cowboys to also struggle. Partially, due to the loss of WR Terrell Owens, but mostly due to the ineptness of coach Wade Phillips.

Prediction: Dallas 28, Tampa Bay 17

Kansas City at Baltimore, Baltimore favored by 13

I am sick of getting boring Baltimore Ravens games. It is almost enough to make me move from Virginia. The Ravens defense will be beasts yet again this year, while QB Joe Flacco needs to just be average like he was last season. For the Chiefs, it is expected that QB Matt Cassel will start but he could be gone in a hurry facing the pressure the Ravens will put on him.

Prediction: Baltimore 24, Kansas City 7

Washington at New York Giants, Giants favored by 6 1/2

For the second straight season these two NFC East rivals kick off the season in New York, er I mean New Jersey. The story all year for the Skins will be Jason Campbell and Jim Zorn. They are essentially married to each other, and will either succeed or fail together. This will be our first chance to see if the Giants offense can actually have a passing game with no proven wide receivers. For Redskins fans, will Albert Haynesworth's presence have an immediate impact on the defense's ability to create turnovers? This should be a very good game, and a closer game than Vegas thinks. I think the running power of Giants RB Brandon Jacobs carries them to victory.

Prediction: New York Giants 20, Washington Redskins 17

Chicago at Green Bay, Green Bay favored by 3 1/2

One of the longest, most storied rivalries in the NFL takes center stage on Sunday night. It will be the regular season debut of new Bears QB Jay Cutler, seen as the savior of the franchise. The Packers are expected to make a huge leap from last year's 6-10 campaign. The defense is expected to be improved, and the offense is thought by many to potentially be the best in the league.

Prediction: Green Bay 27, Chicago 17

Buffalo Bills at New England Patriots, New England favored by 11

With the Bills signing WR Terrell Owens in the off season, and the return of Patriots QB Tom Brady, this game seemed worthy of a Monday Night slot. However, the Bills have been in complete turmoil for the last week, firing their Offensive Coordinator and releasing a starting offensive lineman. I don't think Brady will miss a beat this year, and he and WR Randy Moss will make sweet music together. I thought TO could stay happy this year but the Bills are a mess and I think things will get ugly sooner rather than later.

Prediction: New England 41, Buffalo 13

San Diego at Oakland, San Diego favored by 9 1/2

There are two things about ESPN that befuddle me. First, their insistence on airing a Monday Night San Francisco/Arizona game every year, and second, their insistence on having the Raiders on Monday Night Football. This will be like almost every other time the Raiders have been on Monday Night to open the season, an embarrassing, pitiful loss.

Prediction: San Diego 38, Oakland 17

Rest of Week 1

Miami at Atlanta, Atlanta favored by 4

Two surprise teams from last year do battle in Week One. It seems that most think the Dolphins will take a step back, while Falcons QB Matt Ryan's hype continues to grow. Considering that the Falcons have never had back-to-back winning seasons in franchise history, I think they are the best bet to have a precipitous fall this year.

Prediction: Miami 24, Atlanta 21

Denver at Cincinnati, Cincinnati favored by 4 1/2

These two teams are seemingly headed in opposite directions. The Broncos had a tumultuous off-season, that has spilled into the season with the pouting of WR Brandon Marshall. The Bengals had a relatively quiet off-season in that they weren't making daily headlines for having someone arrested. QB Carson Palmer will be making his return and seemingly has a highly motivated Chad Ochocinco to throw to this year.

Prediction: Cincinnati 27, Denver 20

Minnesota at Cleveland, Minnesota favored by 4

The Brett Favre era continues for a 19th season. This time Favre is playing for one of the Packers biggest rivals, the Minnesota Vikings. Favre couldn't have asked for a better first opponent, the stinky, smelly Browns.

Prediction: Minnesota 26, Cleveland 6

Jacksonville at Indianapolis, Indianapolis favored by 7

The Jaguars always seem to play the Colts tough, including last season when they won at Indianapolis. This will be a new era for the Colts, as it is their first game without longtime coach Tony Dungy and WR Marvin Harrison. I think the Colts get the win but it will be closer than the experts think.

Prediction: Indianapolis 28, Jacksonville 25

Detroit at New Orleans, New Orleans favored by 13

So how long will it take the Lions to get their first victory of the 2009 season? Orbetter yet, will they win a game in 2009? I don't think Lions fans have to fear, with a new regime in town I think the Lions will be better. By better I mean, when they lose at least it might be kinda close.

Prediction: New Orleans 34, Detroit 27

Philadelphia at Carolina, Philadelphia favored by 1

The Mike Vick era won't start until Week 3, but this is still an intriguing game. The Panthers looked absolutely dreadful in the pre-season. While usually I don't take much stock in pre-season, it would have helped the Panthers to feel a little momentum after the way their season ended with such a dud last year. The Eagles have a lot of question marks on defense. The Panthers rushing attack could have a field day, but I think QB Jake Delhomme makes one mistake too many.

Prediction: Philadelphia 27, Carolina 23

New York Jets at Houston Texans, Houston favored by 4 1/2

Mark Sanchez makes his debut for the Jets, while the Texans still aren't sure if they will have to turn to Rex Grossman to start in place of the (always) hobbled Matt Schaub. If the Texans can't beat Sanchez and the Jets at home to start their season, Texans coach Gary Kubiak might want to start updating his resume.

Prediction: Houston 20, New York Jets 13

San Francisco at Arizona, Arizona favored by 6 1/2

This is a great first test for the 49ers. There were signs of promise at the end of last year under coach Mike Singletary, now its time to see how he can do over a full season. He made the right choice going with QB Shaun Hill, and it looks like draft pick RB Glen Coffee could be a tremendous complement to RB Frank Gore. The Cardinals are getting very little publicity for a team that made the Super Bowl last year. I don't think anyone knows what to expect out of the Cardinals. When the Niners lose late on a batted down pass, I hope Michael Crabtree hangs his head in shame.

Prediction: Arizona 29, San Francisco 24

St. Louis at Seattle, Seattle favored by 8 1/2

This game wins the title of the "Who gives a crap" game of the week.

Prediction: Seattle 28, St. Louis 7

Cram Session - Week 1

Football is back! The college football season kicks off Thursday night with two Top 25 teams doing battle as Oregon takes on Boise State, and rolls through the weekend, with the most intriguing game being Alabama against Virginia Tech. For those of you that read Cram Session last year you will remember that I had a part called "Games That Matter to Me That May Not Matter to You". That was so I could talk about my favorite teams Notre Dame and Nebraska's games since neither spent any time in the Top 25. However, starting this year both are ranked in the Top 25 and it is my hope that I won't have to bring that feature back this year. Now with the housekeeping out of the way, on to the games.

Charleston Southern at #1 Florida

The Gators are almost universally considered to be the best team this year and a sure bet to repeat as National Champions. They return all of their defensive starters and almost all of their offensive starters. Their most famous returnee is the man that can walk on water in the eyes of some, QB Tim Tebow. I think Florida is very good but I also think their schedule is pretty weak this year. The only real test I see them having is their game at LSU. As for this one, hopefully Florida coach Urban Meyer has a heart, and doesn't let his Gators put up 200.

Prediction: Florida 77, Charleston Southern 7

Louisiana-Monroe at #2 Texas

I think Texas was jobbed last year by the BCS. They defeated Oklahoma during the regular season and deserved to face Florida in the BCS Championship game. Despite that, the Longhorns have plenty to look forward to this year, as they return star QB Colt McCoy. The Big 12 South will come down to the Red River Shootout like it does almost every year. Until then Texas will get fat on the cupcakes.

Prediction: Texas 48, Louisiana-Monroe 14

#20 BYU vs #3 Oklahoma

The Sooners lost some pieces but like Florida and Texas are returning their star quarterback, Sam Bradford. They get a good first test against BYU, out of the growing in legitimacy Mountain West conference. These two will meet in the Dallas Cowboys new Texas Stadium. The biggest question in this one isn't whether the Sooners will win, its which teams punter will hit the video board?

Prediction: Oklahoma 34, BYU 23

San Jose State at #4 USC

USC coach Pete Carroll has decided go with true freshman Matt Barkley as his starting quarterback. It was an interesting decision by Carroll, and one that to me, certainly gives some teams hope to beat USC. San Jose State isn't one of those teams.

Prediction: USC 38, San Jose State 7

#5 Alabama vs. #7 Virginia Tech

This is the game of the weekend. Last year Alabama met another highly ranked, overrated ACC team, Clemson, and exposed them as the flukefrauds that they were. I don't think things will be much different this year. A lot of people like Virginia Tech, but I'm not one of them. Their offense is God awful and while that may work against the Marylands and Dukes of the college football world, it won't cut it against Bama.

Prediction: Alabama 27, Virginia Tech 7

Navy at #6 Ohio State

I didn't know about this game until about a week ago but there is something very cool about Navy playing at Ohio State. Apparently Ohio State is imploring the crowd to cheer the Midshipmen when they come on to the field. You might think it would come naturally to a person to cheer for people who risk their lives for our freedom but they are kind of slow in Ohio.

Prediction: Ohio State 38, Navy 21

#8 Mississippi at Memphis

I would like to say that the Hokies are the most overrated team in college football, but that distinction belongs to Ole Miss. Sure Ole Miss had some impressive wins last year against Florida and Texas Tech. I will concede that QB Jevan Snead could be a Heisman candidate but that team last year had no expectations. Its a lot different when you have a target on your back from the get go. Enjoy your Top 10 ranking now Rebels fans, because once the SEC season kicks into gear, it will be sayonara.

Prediction: Mississippi 30, Memphis 20

#13 Georgia at #9 Oklahoma State

I don't really understand all the love the Cowboys are getting. When faced with having to play good teams last season they fell flat on their faces. The atmosphere for their game against Georgia on Saturday will be tremendous but I think the Bulldogs will be up to the challenge. Georgia was a disappointing team last year and with the departures of QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshon Moreno they should conceivably be worse. While that may come to be true, I think they pull off the mini upset in Stillwater.

Prediction: Georgia 28, Oklahoma State 27

Akron at #9 Penn State

No, that is not a typo, two teams are ranked 9th. For the Notre Dame schedule haters out there, check out Penn State's joke of a schedule sometime. "We are....scared to play anyone good!"

Prediction: Penn State 45, Akron 13

#11 LSU at Washington

LSU had quite the fall from grace last year, before somewhat redeeming themselves with a beat down of Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Washington might actually have a chance at winning a game this season, since they fired the most overrated coach in the history of EVAR, Ty Willingham.

Prediction: LSU 33, Washington 10

Maryland at #12 California

Cal will be looking for revenge after their loss at Maryland last season. Maryland scheduled that game for 10 AM pacific time, so the Golden Bears have scheduled this one for 10 PM Eastern Time. They could play this game at any time, Maryland isn't traveling across the country and winning at Cal.

Prediction: California 31, Maryland 14

#16 Oregon at #14 Boise State

I am probably going to stay up late Thursday night watching this one. Oregon starts a new era with the retirement of Mike Belloti, and the debut of Chip Kelly as coach. Sources tell me that Boise State coach Chris Petersen might consider taking another coaching job during this game, but will ultimately stay at Boise for at least another week.

Prediction: Boise State 31, Oregon 28

Jacksonville State at #15 Georgia Tech

Former Navy coach Paul Johnson looks like he could be starting something really good at Tech. But seriously, do Tech fans even give a flying monkey crap about this game?

Prediction: Georgia Tech 44, Jacksonville State 9

Miami at #18 Florida State

Much to America's chagrin these two will be returning to Monday night to bore the entire country. Last year, when they played on a Saturday and no one cared, they actually had an entertaining game. People think Miami is back this year...people are stupid.

Prediction: Florida State 5, Miami 3

Utah State at #19 Utah

Utah rides a 14-game winning streak going into this blood rivalry against Utah State. Its a shame that the Utes already know they have no shot at playing for the National title.

Prediction: Utah 26, Utah State 10

Citadel at #21 North Carolina

Boring. Its games like these that make me wonder how people can say with a straight face that college football is better than the NFL.

Prediction: North Carolina 41, Citadel 8

Northern Iowa at #22 Iowa

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. Rumor has it that if Iowa goes 3-9, the state will hold a parade for coach Kirk Ferentz and extend his contract through 2050.

Prediction: Iowa 11, Northern Iowa 3

Nevada at #23 Notre Dame

Yes! Finally, something I care about. Expectations are high and even I would have to say outrageously high in South Bend this year. With a much lighter schedule than the Irish have had in recent memory some people are crazy enough to think the Irish can make the national title game. Ok, well Lou Holtz is the only one crazy enough to think that, but what everyone is expecting is a BCS berth. No BCS berth will mean the end of the Charlie Weis era, and then Jon Gruden or Urban Meyer can swoop in and save the day. The Irish have a ton of talent on offense, led by QB Jimmy Clausen, and WRs Michael Floyd and Golden Tate. The Irish have to get a running game going this year and hope that Armando Allen Jr. or Robert Hughes can provide one. The defense was inconsistent last year and will also need to play better for Notre Dame to be successful. I certainly think a BCS berth is reasonable but that will only happen if the season gets off on the right foot. I want to see Notre Dame crush Nevada and make a statement. The Charlie Weis era has led me to expect disappointment.

Prediction: Notre Dame 35, Nevada 24

Florida Atlantic at #24 Nebraska

My two favorite teams right next to each other in the rankings. The only thing that would make me happier is if they were #1 and #2 going into the BCS Championship. Husker fans have visions of the BCS in their head. I don't think any are expecting to compete for a National title this year but they are expecting Nebraska to win the Big 12 North and have a chance to compete for the Big 12 Championship. The revolving door at QB continues for Nebraska with junior Zac Lee taking over the starting job. At RB Roy Helu Jr. returns and I think could have a 1,000 yard rushing season. The defense is looking to return to the dominance of Blackshirt defenses of Huskers past. They are led by the beast that is simply known as Suhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, but to his parents he is Ndamukong Suh. Florida Atlantic is coached by Howard Schnellenberger, former Miami coach. Schnellenberger coached Miami in 1984 when they defeated one of the greatest Nebraska teams ever, for the National Championship. Different time old man, enjoy your beat down in Lincoln.

Prediction: Nebraska 36, Florida Atlantic 14

Northern Colorado at #25 Kansas

When does Kansas QB Todd Reesing leave? I am sick of him and can't wait for the Huskers stomping out Kansas in Lawrence this year.

Prediction: Kansas 42, Northern Colorado 24
